ANKARA (NET) - At least six people have been killed and 53 injured in an explosion that occurred on Istiklal Street, said the Turkish president on Sunday.

“Six people have been killed and 53 injured in an explosion that occurred on Istiklal Street,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Erdogan further said: “The first observations indicate that a woman played a role in the attack.”

Immediately after the "treacherous attack", police and emergency health service units have been dispatched to the scene, he noted

While the cause of the explosion is not yet known, Erdogan said that based on the initial information, the explosion might be a suspected act of terrorism.

On Twitter, Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said that the explosion occurred at around 16.20 p.m. (1320 GMT) on Istiklal Avenue in the Beyoglu district.
