Israeli President Isaac Herzog met Sunday Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa during the first trip by an Israeli head of state to the tiny Gulf nation.

Accompanied by an economic delegation, the Israeli president’s historic two-day state visit to Manama focused on strengthening economic cooperation between both nations.

Herzog was welcomed upon his arrival at the airport by Bahrain's Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani.

After, the Israeli president held talks with King Hamad at Al-Qudaibiya Palace where they discussed ways to bolster economic cooperation as well as bilateral relations and regional developments.

“We value and appreciate the developments witnessed in the relations between our two countries, since the signing of the Abraham Accords,” the state news agency BNA reported King Hamad saying during their meeting.

For his part, Herzog said Bahrain and Israel are pioneers in achieving peace in the Middle East.

“My visit underscores the importance Israel attaches to relations with Bahrain, including partnerships on defense, trade, tourism & environment,” Herzog said on Twitter following the meeting.

Once-bitter adversaries, Bahrain and Israel took steps for full diplomatic relations in 2020 with the former US President Donald Trump-brokered Abraham Accords.

Herzog will move to United Arab Emirates’ capital Abu Dhabi Monday to address the Abu Dhabi Space Debate.
