The UN human rights chief on Tuesday decried the latest Israeli attacks on Rafah, which resulted in the killing of mostly women and children.
The High Commissioner Turk's remarks came after Israeli strikes killed around 33 Palestinians in Rafah city in the past few days.
"The latest images of a premature child taken from the womb of her dying mother, of the adjacent two houses where 15 children and five women were killed - this is beyond warfare," Turk said.
Turk said that every 10 minutes in Gaza a child is either killed or wounded, stressing that although children are under the protection of the laws of war, “They are ones who are disproportionately paying the ultimate price in this war.”
-'Horrified' by mass graves in and around Gaza’s medical complexes
Turk said he was "horrified by the destruction of An Nasser Medical Complex and Al Shifa Medical Complex and the reported discovery of mass graves in and around these locations, calling for “independent, effective and transparent investigations into the deaths."
"Hospitals are entitled to very special protection under international humanitarian law. And the intentional killing of civilians, detainees, and others who are hors de combat is a war crime," Turk added.
Regarding Israel’s potential ground attack on Rafah city, Turk said that such an attack would lead to further breaches of international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
Touching on human rights violations in the occupied West Bank, Turk stressed, "Despite international condemnation of massive settler attacks from 12-14 April facilitated by the Israeli Security Forces (ISF), settler violence has continued with the support, protection, and participation of the ISF."
During a 50-hour long raid in Nur Shams refugee camp and Tulkarem city starting on April 18, Israeli forces killed 14 Palestinians, including 3 children.
Since Israel launched attacks on the enclave, 34,151 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and some 77,000 others injured.
